ハイブリッド自動車に蓄電ユニットを付加（あるいは蓄電ユニットの容量を増強）して、純電気自動車モードでの走行を可能とした自動車。一般的にハイブリッド自動車に搭載される蓄電装置（二次電池など）の容量は小さいため、純電気自動車モードでの走行ができなかったり、できても純電気自動車モードで走行できる距離は限られているが、より大容量の蓄電装置を装備し外部充電することで、市街地などは純電気自動車（あるいは駆動力の大部分を電力駆動）として走行し、高速道路などを高速で走行する場合はハイブリッド走行とすることができる。これにより、ハイブリッド自動車よりもさらに燃料消費を抑えることが可能となり、走行中の二酸化炭素排出量の削減も期待できる。

日本国内では、トヨタがプラグインハイブリッド自動車の公道走行認可を取得するなど、実用化に向けた開発が進みつつある。なお、プラグインハイブリッド自動車の基幹部品ともいうべき二次電池の開発には、国プロとしても取り組んでおり、2007年度からNEDO「次世代自動車用高性能蓄電システム技術開発」が開始された。米国においてもプラグインハイブリッド自動車用の二次電池開発プロジェクトが開始されている。

なお、プラグインハイブリッド自動車はPHEVと略記される。ちなみに、ハイブリッド自動車はHEV、純電気自動車はBEVである。
